J. Bentley Owens, III (Bent) joined the firm in January, 2014. As the newest member of the firm and community, Bent brought with him to Columbiana his 35 years of experience from one of Birmingham’s leading litigation firms to join Shelby County’s preeminent firm. Known predominantly for his work with public and quasi-governmental entities, he also concentrates on products liability, business, personal injury and employment litigation.
After graduating from the University of Alabama’s College of Commerce and Business Administration with a B.S. degree in Accounting, he attended and earned his law degree from the University’s School of Law in 1979. Bent clerked for United States District Court Judge Clarence W. Allgood before starting private practice in Birmingham in 1981. He is a member of the Alabama State Bar, where he chaired the Insurance Programs Committee for several years. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and all District Courts in Alabama. His other professional associations include the Birmingham Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, the Alabama Association of Municipal Attorneys and the International Municipal Lawyer’s Association.
During his career, he has represented more than 50 of Alabama’s cities, counties and towns in courtrooms throughout the state. He has also defended more than 100 appeals in the Alabama and federal appellate courts. His products liability work has involved cases in more than 10 jurisdictions around the United States and Canada.
His wife Jennie and he have three grown children.
